The purpose of the club is to promote the best interest of the State of Michigan, particularly on the areas of water safety, water recreational facilities, boating facilities and improve marine recreational development and assist in the promotion and expansion of recruiting, training and educational facilities of marine oriented associations

The Michigan Commanders Club, was formed in 1962 by a group of politically interested businessman and state government officials from the Lansing, Detroit and Grand Rapids area. It was to provide a formal organization to utilize the interest, time and facilities of the honorary Commanders duly appointed to that position under the Department of Military Affairs and the Michigan Military Establishments.
